The track plan is here on page 4 viewtopic.php?f=22&t=20192&start=45 and the scissor crossing is at the entry point to the upper level terminus. can you post a track plan and indicate the actual sections to be fed by the cabs? if it is in the middle of a yard and the yard is just one section then no need for 8 irj's. this would only need to be the case IF the slip is in a possition that means it needs to be switched between sections of the layout itself. atleast that way you can't go wrong no matter what. maybe it would be safer to isolate all 8 joins and treat the slip as an independant section to be fed via which ever cab you need it set to at the time. i would expect if the route set has the appropriate cab set to that section then there ought not to be a problem. It may do depending on how the layout is wired? as in common return or not, and the actual track plan itself. What is really confusing me is that it says it swaps the controller feeds from one track to the other, surely this would be a short circuit if it wasn't isolated? Perhaps I am over thinking it!

you may be confusing yourself by thinking that the outer rail needs an irj when you connect it to a point, and then it does, but that irj is actually there as one of the two on the live frog of the point, rather than the outer rail of the slip. but i'm fairly confident that 4 irj's is all that is needed. and if i'm wrong? you will be able to sort it without having to dig up track or cut gaps. if you are not convinced use 8 irj's and fit seperate feeds, but you will see when wiring that they don't change. Any 2 switches hooked up cause a short.Locoworks wrote:just treat it the same as a point, the long outer rails don't change polarity, one is always the outer rail, and one always the inner. All leads to the switches have been checked.

I am just guessing at this point, but pulling them out of their respective holes would be a sure way to test for this type of issue. I get the short on my work bench.Īre you running your switches though a sheet metal control panel? If one of the leads internally to the switch is common to the metal switch frame and mounting threads, this could be a problem. Are the switches regular switches or at they temporary switches?Īlso, if the switches when hooked up singly, have you considered swapping the red/white wires on ONE of the switches when both are hooked up? Not sure if this will work or not, but it sounds like it's the combination that causes the problem? Worth a look? I'll admit that wiring is my weak point, but it's something that I would look at. No, the red and white wires to the machine short out. I need to mention that the short on occurs when I try to connect 2 switches to the power supply.Īttached is also a picture of the switches without the LEDsĭoes the Tortoise machine move the points each time you throw the DPDT switch? You do realize the Tortoises are stall machines, right? That means they will always be drawing current, even when the points have completed their movement.

I looked at the directions that came with the Tortoise machines and I have it just as they show. I tried reversing the input wires on one switch and that shorted before I could get it hooked up securely. I tried it with all of the LEDs disconnected and just the DC to the switches. I tried a different power supply and it is just as bad if not worse. Sometimes it is a constant short and sometimes it will only short for a few seconds. The short only occurs when hooked to the power supply.Įven with the power supply unplugged from the wall. Switch I get a short between the Red and White wires going to the Tortoise machines.Īfter posting this I did some more checking. My problem is that when all the switches are connected to the power supply, when I flip a One red LED lights and one green LED lights.įlip a switch and the LED goes to the other color, as it should. When I check each switch as I wire it everything works as it should. The switches are wired to 2 bi-color LEDs, red/green. Below is a picture of the DPDT switches for 2 Tortoise machines.
